Name: Dinah Lance (Black Canary) Door: Re-app Submissive Canon: DCEU Canon Point: End of Birds of Prey Age: 27 Appearance: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EMMq9zwWsAAXe6j.jpg History: https://dcextendeduniverse.fandom.com/wiki/Black_Canary CR AU (Optional): Dinah has already been in Duplicity for around 2 years before I dropped her, and she’s had a completely bumpy ride in game. Much to her dismay, Dinah learned that Roman and Zsasz were very much alive in Duplicity and out for revenge. As soon as Dinah arrived, Roman attempted to murder her by drowning her in the baths. She retaliated by knocking Zsasz out in the shower. As they learned to live together, Roman and Zsasz made life difficult for Dinah. They harassed her on the network and threatened her at work. This culminated in Zsasz kidnapping her from her new job, along with her new boss. Zsasz tortured her before murdering her boss. He blamed Dinah for the death before killing her. He then displayed her body with her tongue cut out. When Dinah was brought back, she was petrified – not for herself as she knew she could fight, but for her friends and employers. As a result, to keep her circle safe, she went back to work for Roman and even became his Dominant. Roman found her easy to manipulate because many of her friends turned on her because of her going back to him. Roman made friends with a man called Kilgrave, who had supernatural mind control powers. Dinah was susceptible to this and the pair of them abused Dinah. She came out of that encounter even more vulnerable than before and with Roman’s initials scarred into her ass cheek. Contrary to any sensible notion, Dinah slowly began to fall for Victor Zsasz. They worked together at summer camp to tie Roman down so that Zsasz could carve his initials into Roman’s side. Shortly after returning from camp, Dinah found out that her designation had been switched from dominant to submissive, along with Zsasz’s, whilst Roman had switched from submissive to dominant. This began Dinah’s anger at Duplicity’s system; she saw Roman being rewarded after everything he had done to her, whilst she suffered dire consequences for a (big) lapse in judgement. After this, Dinah began frequenting the People Zoo, often at the behest of Roman or because of raging out against Roman on the public network. She tried to keep a lid on it but was becoming more rebellious the more distant from Roman she became. During this time, Dinah fell for Faith Lehane and the pair started dating. Dinah still hooked up with Harley frequently, but more often it was Zsasz she turned to, which caused some friction with both Faith and Roman. Roman punished Dinah by hurting Zsasz and then by assaulting the pair of them in Scratch. Dinah started to realise that, though she hated Roman, she had grown so used to him that she almost needed him. She began to exert her dominance over him too, and realising that she enjoyed being in charge. Encouraged by Zsasz, she began to explore the BDSM world a bit more, learning about safely hurting those who enjoy pain. It’s not something she enjoys but she’s willing to do it for someone she loves. Dinah also became closer to Faith and really began to fall in love with her. During yet another stint in the Zoo, this time for torturing and murdering Roman, Dinah met Jesus, a fellow rebel dissatisfied with Duplicity. Together, they began to plot to take down the government. When Dinah came back, Faith was gone. Kazu gave her work at the Back Door, the club Faith had built for Dinah, but Dinah was upset and lost without Faith. She ended up pairing with Rosita in an attempt to rehabilitate her image as a trouble causer. What actually happened was that she realised she was having intimacy issues because she was not over Faith, Rosita spent quite a few nights frustrated and together, they began to talk about rebellion and escape from the city's rules. Rosita introduced Dinah to her community and they slowly began to trust one another. The Creator announced that he was sending all LIARs home earlier this year: Dinah was glad but also sad to leave this place and the people she was friends with. She broke into and trashed the Back Door with Rosita, leaving her name in gold spray paint above the stage. She trashed the abandoned Insecurity too and confided in Rosita about Roman's abuse and what she did to Roman too.The pair bonded over similar experiences and Dinah vowed to help Ro in any way she could. When they were being taken into realignment, Dinah and Rosita were forcibly separated and Dinah was sent home. OH – and somewhere along the way, she gained pierced nipples and a pierced clit, courtesy of Harley. Personality: Positive Trait: empathetic Dinah’s a pretty ‘normal’ person. She’s grounded, down to earth and she has a big heart. She really feels for Cass throughout the movie, and tries to help the kid out when she can. Again, the same can be said for Harley as well. She seems well able to tune into people’s emotions and react accordingly. For example, with Roman, she’s submissive; when he’s humiliating people, she feels for them, wiping away tears and when she’s with Harley, she can both tune into the other woman’s eccentric vibes but also remain grounded enough to keep them both on track. Negative Trait: Ruled by emotions Dinah’s a pretty emotional character herself, and a lot of the time she lets her emotions get the better of her. This is shown particularly with Zsasz. Huntress might have shot the arrow through his neck, but Dinah stabbed him in the stomach and pumped that arrow through his neck a good few times. Her loathing of the man for the fear he had kept her in, and for what he wanted to do to Cass, to Harley, overwhelmed Dinah and she had to make sure that, not only was he dead, but that he felt all of that pain. When she was younger, she was so upset about being ‘abandoned’ that she blocked out a lot of the world. She was overwhelmed by a sadness that left her vulnerable. In Roman’s charge, fear dominated her life, keeping her submissive most of the time. The fights with Harley were adrenaline filled and full of an almost excitement at breaking free, and her jubilation at the end of the film clouds even her anger that Harley has stolen from her. She lets herself be ruled by her dominating emotion without considering the others too much. Negative Trait: - Loyal / easily manipulated Dinah is very easily manipulated. Because she’s so used to being ignored, she falls easily for signs of friendship. Roman has completely manipulated her: he calls her ‘little bird’ and his threats, along with the (often unwanted) affection he shows her by holding her close and including her in his plans and even keeping a roof over her head keeps her loyal to him. This isn’t to say that she likes any of his attention, or indeed Roman himself. Indeed, through much of the film, she’s repulsed by his behaviour. At the same time though, he’s the only one who acknowledges her, the only one who cares and so she remains loyal to him, even in the face of his disgusting actions towards a lot of women in particular in canon. This same trait of being easily manipulated is evident again in her sudden alliance with Harley. Before deciding to team up with her, Dinah wasn’t particularly taken by Harley, regarding her as a bit of a drunken asshole, and then a hindrance in her mission to recover the diamond, and finally pretty wicked for duct taping Cass to a toilet. But through Harley’s reasoning, Dinah realized that her relationship with Roman was broken beyond repair, and so she formed an alliance, and even a friendship with her. Harley needed Dinah for her fighting skills, and indeed her canary cry rather than feeling particularly affectionate for her. Dinah didn’t even seem to mind too much that Harley stole her car at the end of the film, laughing it off as a bit of a joke between mates. Negative Trait: - Reluctant Dinah hesitates to help people. Sure of being rejected, and remembering how nobody ever helped her when she was younger, Dinah isn’t quick to jump into most situations. She assesses what’s going on around her and only steps in when she has absolutely no other choice. This can be seen in her reluctant dealings with the police, with giving Cass money and even saving Harley when she was too drunk to help herself. For most of the film, Dinah is in absolute denial about what Roman does. She must know that he has people murdered and tortures. She watches him order Harley’s death. She drives him to some murder scenes herself. She watches whilst he strips a woman. And in all of this, she does nothing. She pretends that Roman isn’t as bad as he is because he’s all she has. Her denial plays into that she’s easily manipulated: she refuses to see the dark in Roman because she so desperately needs to see the light. Powers and Abilities:Power –‘Canary Cry’ – which basically amounts to a sonic scream. This s a skill inherited from her mum. Dinah’s scream produces shockwaves and can disarm and even kill opponents. It frequently blows people off their feet. It’s useful in battle as she can attack several opponents at once. Using this cry exhausts her to the point where she loses consciousness. In game previously, I have always said that when she was arrested, the Sin Guards would spray her throat with a ‘freezing spray’ so she couldn’t use her voice to escape or hurt anyone. I’m happy to modify this as you see fit. Abilities - Physically fit – Dinah is physically very strong and fit: she is able to defeat men who are much bigger than her in physical altercations, and she spends most of the film running without getting out of breath. - Fighting - Dinah is trained in mixed martial arts and fighting. She can kick high, though her punches are quite vicious too. - Weaponry - Dinah is adept with a variety of weapons, including guns and baseball bats - Singing – Dinah has a brilliant singing voice, due to her metahuman abilities to manipulate soundwaves. Inventory:one knife, one gun (without bullets) and the keys to her car (that she doesn’t have) Samples: This is from Duplicity a while back, when Faith and Dinah’s worst traits were swapped: this is the aftermath, a reconciliation. Dinah'd asked Faith to meet her at the beach, at the bonfire pit where they'd first met. She held out absolutely no hopes of her dominant coming: Dinah didn't blame her either. She'd been awful to Faith. She'd been awful to a lot of people. Since ending up working as Beck's cleaner, Dinah had been spending a lot of time at the beach. The nip of the wind and the roar of the ocean calmed her and drowned out the constant voice in her head berating herself. Of course, the beer helped. Empty bottles littered the beach nearby, and Dinah clutched one even as she waited, staring morosely into the fire, for Faith not to show up. As five, ten minutes passed after their arranged time, Dinah sighed and shrugged. She hadn't expected Faith to show up but she'd hoped. Why hope any more? Dinah raised the bottle to her lips and took another swig. Faith has no idea where Dinah's been or where she's been staying. She's not really known what to do about it. The words said between them still stung and tore at her heart. And it had felt pretty definitive that they were through. Whatever they had been. Because it had certainly been more than a contract that lay between them. The night played over and over in her head since it happened. And how it ended. She never wanted to hurt Dinah, but the fist had come out like second nature. Violence had always been her visceral reaction to emotional pain. She finally arrives, fifteen minutes late, stopping just shy of the transition from grass to sand. Dinah's back is reflected in the moonlight and she feels her stomach twisting in a knot anew. It would be easier to just leave. To let her contract expire and move on, to save herself any more heartache. Find a submissive she didn't even care about and move on. Eventually, she gets closer, setting herself down on the log furthest from Di, tugging her jacket tight around herself like a shield. This already feels like a mistake. She shouldn't have come. "Hey, Di." She doesn't know what else to say and she doesn't move to get a beer. It feels like someone's tied a lead weight around her stomach when Faith speaks. Dinah cares so much for her that the idea that it's over, that she's caused them to be over, has been eating her up ever since it happened. Dinah glances up at Faith as she's greeted, offering a nod of her head as acknowledgement. "Didn't think you'd come after... you know?" Dinah looks away quickly, embarrassed. "Thank you," she mutters. "Didn't think you'd even ask me to..." The message had been a shock, truthfully. How they'd left things had felt fairly final. Even if she still doesn't entirely sure how it even happened. She stares into the flame, working her jaw to fight down the threatening emotions. "I'm sorry I hit you." Even with every hurtful thing Dinah had said, she's still guilty for doing it. She'd just had such a hard time stamping down her emotions that night and Dinah had been relentless. Dinah shrugs and chuckles quietly. “I’ve had worse.” For a moment, she looks away from Faith and back at the crackling flames. Dinah sighs. “I deserved it. I was being a fucking bitch that night. I don’t know what happened.” Dinah trails off and takes a swig from her beer. “I’m sorry.” ... "Faith?" Dinah hesitates. She wishes they were sat next to each other but scared of rejection, she sits back down. "I was so jealous of you. Of everyone. For days and days, just this burning pit inside my stomach and all I could see was you not wanting to be near me. That I wasn't... good enough. Or pretty or kick ass or clever or anything else enough. It made me so mad to see you so happy." Dinah takes a breath. She goes to say something and stops. She takes a swig of her beer again. "I... Fuck. I wanted to ruin it. I figured why should you have fun when I'm not?" She's quiet for a moment. "I've never felt like that before. Mad because people have shit I don't. It was so horrible walking round hating everyone and everything." ... “Really?” Dinah meets Faith’s gaze again. There’s sympathy in her expression, but something else too. Admiration. “How the hell did you even survive? Faith, I have been so fucking miserable for like, three weeks. And so, so angry. The hell did you survive that?” Dinah looks back in the fire. “And you with like, feelings? All coming at you at once so you don’t even know what to think? Is that what it felt like? Just everything - and you feel it?” ... Dinah’s silent, letting Faith’s words sink in. “Really?” She wants to reach out and hug Faith. This poor, poor woman. She makes no move. “I get it though. The wanting to die bit. I wished you’d end me. I nearly went back to Roman to tell him what I did. Just because…” She sighs. “It sounds like me. What you had going on. A million different feelings and always making the wrong choice to go with them. I used to be so good at hiding it all, but it’s got harder over time.” "That's not good though," Dinah says softly. There is nothing she'd like to do more than reach out to Faith, to pull her into a hug, to let her know that she is wanted, that she's Dinah's first choice. But Dinah doesn't move. She pushes her hair back. "I dunno. Maybe? I've never felt that way before though? Jealous. I've always just been... I've not really cared what others had. I didn't know how to deal with that shit. I guess... if it was the city? I dunno? Trying to break us up? Not that we were together," she adds hastily. "Just... I care about you, Faith. I always will now. And I get it. There's Buffy and... Harls? But it's never been like that with Harley. And honestly, you and Buffy... but..." Shut up, Dinah. "I'm sorry, Faith. I really am." https://mahem.dreamwidth.org/1530.html?thread=506618#cmt506618 https://mahem.dreamwidth.org/1530.html?thread=561146#cmt561146 - cw for murder and sex https://duplicitymemes.dreamwidth.org/22749.html?thread=60603101#cmt60603101 https://duplicitymemes.dreamwidth.org/26028.html?thread=67456172#cmt67456172 - new TDM https://duplicitymemes.dreamwidth.org/26028.html?thread=67492012#cmt67492012 - NEW tdm There’s obviously more threads in Duplicity over the past 2 years that I cannot access from my end right now, if that helps?
